I have worked as a midwife for thirty years, and during that time have developed a passion to support mothers who choose to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is natural but no longer instinctive, and babies rely on their parents to give them the human milk designed for their health.
Few women have seen their mothers or sisters breastfeed so it can take
some weeks to feel completely confident. With the right advice and encouragement 95% of mothers can breastfeed. During these early weeks, many UK mothers give up in the belief they cannot feed their babies, as a consequence only 1% are still breastfeeding after six months!
My experience over the last three decades has shown that partners are excellent at understanding and supporting women to continue breastfeeding. I enjoy facilitating parents to develop their instinctive skill. Most mothers who stop breastfeeding early wish they could have continued.
You may feel that you need some extra help on this journey to gain all the health benefits for you and your baby. This may be by attending workshops before the birth to learn how breastfeeding works, and one to one visits at home after your baby is born to put your skills into practice.
This amazing natural physiological process exists to nurture and give the best nutrition to our babies. The western world has lost the art of breastfeeding; so for the short and long-term health of our children, mothers need help to succeed. I am offering continuity of advice and encouragement to help you maintain the confidence to achieve your goal.
